Windows Phone 7 – what Microsoft is doing right, wrong and how they can fix it

Windows Phone 7 – what Microsoft is doing right, wrong and how they can fix it: "

cutandpastemockup I know many of our readers feel I am unnecessary and unfairly down on Microsoft’s new mobile OS, and harbour an unnatural love for Windows Mobile 6.

The reasons are however simple – Microsoft has given long time fans of Windows Mobile precious little to love about Windows Phone 7, with each piece of news that gets dribbled out seemingly only making things worse.

The latest is the revelation that the only way to get documents onto a Windows Phone 7 device is either to e-mail it to yourself or use some cloud-based solution such as Sharepoint or Skydrive. No mention of USB transfer or bluetooth FTP or even Activesync. In short again just another poor copy of the iPhone.

Now this bad news is tempered somewhat by the not unexpected news that Windows Phone 7 will support multiple Exchange accounts, but as this seems to be a less than compelling feature that is hardly exciting.

This has prompted to to write another editorial, hopefully giving Microsoft some idea of what would keep this long time Windows Mobile user happy.

What Microsoft has done right is:

1) New user interface developer tools

This was a long time coming, and frankly something Microsoft should have made available years ago.

2) Better minimum hardware specifications

If Microsoft has specified a minimum of ARM7 processors and capacitive screens 18 months ago Windows Mobile would have been a lot more competitive.

3) Multimedia improvements

This is one of the biggest failures of Windows Mobile and Microsoft in general, and we frankly did not need a whole new OS to get an improved Windows Mobile player.

4) Over the air updates

This essential feature have been lurking in our phones since Windows Mobile 5, but has of course for some unfathomable reason never been used, not even when the widespread Daylight Savings Time issue presented the perfect opportunity.

The list of what they have done wrong almost seems too long to list, but I shall give it a go in any case.

1) The massive delay before the release of Windows Phone 7

We understand Microsoft changed strategy half-way along the way and threw out all previous work, including the baby with the bath water, but this particular error may be the fatal one.

2) Removing signature features such as cut and paste and multi-tasking.

These are particularly ironic in the face of the iPhone adopting the same. And before anyone say the iPhone is using the same version of multi-tasking as Windows Phone 7, this is patently not true when the iPhone OS 4 will allow background GPS navigation while Windows Phone 7 will not.

3) Removing all backward compatibility

It is really a toss up whether this or the delay in release will be the killing blow for Windows Phone 7, but together with the above it means Microsoft starts at exactly 0, with no momentum of upgrading users and no existing ecosystem.

4) A massive reliance on cloud services

Cloud services means a data plan, which limits the market to those willing to pay 50% more to use their device. It is also slow and unreliable in most parts of the world, including many cities in USA.

5) No synergies with desktop Windows

This is another massive weakness. Possibly related to anti-trust fears, we have seen all Microsoft’s competitors leverage their strengths (Apple with ITunes and the iPod and Google with Search, Gmail and advertising). Microsoft’s desktop dominance is not reflected in any way in their mobile OS.

What can Microsoft do to rescue their new OS from almost certain market failure? I will go into specifics.

1) There needs to be a common storage area on the device with USB Storage Mode access, File Explorer access, Bluetooth FTP access etc.

I can accept not having root access to the application storage area and \Windows, but not being able to even browse \My Documents is a travesty. Not being able to enter USB mode and transfer a file rapidly is another.

2) Windows Mobile software compatibility

Even if only in an emulated environment like in WebOS, this would be much better than starting from zero, especially for business users.

3) Proper multi-tasking for certified apps.

Sure, not every application needs multi-tasking but some certainly do. A simple example is a pedometer, which needs to run in the background constantly. The OS obviously also needs a UI to enable better application switching, like the Pre or even iPhone OS 4.0.

4) Give Windows 7 users a reason to run Windows Phone 7

There is about 1000 ways Microsoft could make running both of their OS’s more desirable, but really simple ones could include simply being able to run your sidebar widgets on your phone, or being (easily) able to use your phone as a remote control for desktop Windows Media Player.

5) A roadmap for the development of the OS.

Microsoft could get away with shipping their current crippled implementation if they had a clear roadmap which promised when better features will come. In its absence users who may have waited will simply defect.

6) Be a fast follower

At present Microsoft is doing a pretty good job of copying the iPhone. From 3 years ago that is. Microsoft is a massive company with 1000 people working on their new OS. There is no reason why they can not implement interesting features which appeared on other platforms in their OS, and rapidly too. By reacting so slowly they do little to assuage their image as a slow and lumbering giant.

7) Less reliance on partners

Microsoft traditionally rely on partners to help them achieve their goal. This is failing pretty badly for them, with HP for example most recently cancelling the Slate. Other examples are ideas such as the Spot watches and Sideshow. They need to take responsibility for bringing their own ideas to fruition. This means more first party software and hardware, more games created directly by Microsoft, more accessories made by them, and a more direct relationship with the consumer.

Unless Microsoft takes all or at least some of these ideas on board they are destined to fail, even with consumers and the non-power users who many of our readers feel Windows Phone 7 is created for.

Do our readers feel I judge Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft too harshly? Leave your comments below.

GPS Tab For Touch Flo 3D AKA Sense

GPS Tab For Touch Flo 3D AKA Sense: "

While reading the long list of threads on the touch HD2 imagesection of XDA, I found something that might interest those hardcore HTC sense users. This mod/tab was created by a Russian Fed citizen on XDA, whose called xaoc747. He managed to envision a new way to display your compass, and GPS data, and has made it happen with the first release of his new Sense Tab.

This Tab contains many thing going on at once, and I am sure all HTC HD2 users that want the experience will loss a lot of battery in the process. But that’s neither here or there. If you want to have your GPS in your face and easily accessable at all time this tab comes with:

- work with GPS module without using a third-party navigation software
- definition of current position
- definition of object motion parameters for calculation between the current and previous points
- Determination of directions and distances to given calculation points
- recording of tracks (routes) in automatic and manual modes in a format Yandex maps with further viewing them
- an analysis of the tracks (the specified distance route, maximum and average speed on the route and time of movement on the route)
- Work with the payment points (in the format tags Yandex maps)
- sending SMS with your coordinates in the automatic and manual modes for a given number
- to set the maximum speed and control the speed while driving with the gradation by the fine

Now this might not be the best GPS system you will have on your Windows Phones(I personally use iGo,) but for a free software that looks good and comes with all these features… I only have one question, where do I sign up :) .

You can download it, and install it with the instructions.

TechEd 2010: Porting 6.5 apps to WP7?

TechEd 2010: Porting 6.5 apps to WP7?: "

wp7_start Microsoft have repeatedly stated that there will be no backward compatibility between WP7 and WM6.5, however, this popped up on the TechEd website.

“Come join us for this interactive session on code compatibility between previous Windows Phone applications and Windows Phone 7. Come talk to experienced application developers and hear what they have to say about code compatibility and share your own experiences with other attendees. Even though the programming paradigm for Windows Phone 7 differs from previous Windows Phone versions, managed applications are still written in C#. Taking a number of best practices into consideration, the majority of your existing code, with the exception of the User Interface, can run on Windows Phone 7.”

What this suggests is that whilst the UI layer has changed, the business logic is still basically the same. This is only true for C# developers, but is at least beneficial to some!

The Weirdest Lock Screen… And the Title Goes to: LCARS Star Trek style Lockscreen

The Weirdest Lock Screen… And the Title Goes to: LCARS Star Trek style Lockscreen: "

image

When we usually speak of a lock screen, we are talking about something very simple like the WM6.5 lock screen, or even S2U2, but this one is not that simple. This new lock screen created by slackersink, who resides in the HD2 forum is a very peculiar one. It does not come with directions or instruction, but from the image it seems to have much information all in one place, but I am not quite sure where the unlock part is.

The lock screen to me looks like a map of my locale Mall of America(the biggest Mall in the world) except it has some good details like time, date, notifications, and more.

When you read the title it says it is suppose to be a Star Trek related lock, but for the life of me, I do not know what that is or plan to learn the nature of it(okay, I know what it is… but never watched it).

Thankfully the creator wrote a little note for us to know before using his new look screen:

My first mod, the LCARS Lockscreen! Make your lockscreen resemble the panels on the Enterprise! Yay! Also included, the original files they replaced.

Ahem…

Anyway, here is a zip file of everything needed to make your own lcars lockscreen. It’s a zip because apparently the cabs I had up here didn’t work properly… Can’t beat placing real files yourself, I guess. haha

-
Instructions:

First- Add files in the icons folder to windows\ directory in phone. Just the icons in the folder, not the full folder. Either use icons in the zip or install the icons cab file.

Second- Add lcarswallpaper.png and LS_LockScene_480×800.cpr to windows\lockscreen.

Third, reset the phone and you’re done!

I’ve also included the original files for what this mod changes in case you want to revert back.
-

I have no lockscreen mods, cookie’s home tab lockscreen is set to the default lockscreen so it won’t interfere, or anything aside from the memclock app as you can see on the top right of the screenshot so I can’t guarantee it will work with any mods. Like I said, This is my first so I apologize if it doesn’t work properly on your HD2. As far as mine goes, everything lines up perfectly.

Restart your phone and enjoy!

When you tap the slider to get your notifications, the calendar and clock disappear. I don’t know how to keep them their the entire time. If anyone can help with that, I’d appreciate it.

WP7(Metro) Theme For Many Things(Sense and More)

WP7(Metro) Theme For Many Things(Sense and More): "

Oh okay, well its getting a little much but here is another theme that’s portrayed after the new Metro UI. This theme is one of many that tries to grab the new WP7 look and feel, while keeping the current imagefunctionalities of WP6.5. This one is actually the most customized theme, and is something that people might find interesting.

This is actually pretty cool thought. It comes with many clocks, Metro slider, and Metro Bookmark/Web tab. The Web tab is my favorite, because as you can see in the left, it comes with those blue boxes we will have to get used to in our next UI.

The theme does not stop at the Sense version. It adds Metro ThumbCal themes, and even Metro a Metro theme for Slide2Shutdown.

This theme pretty much covers everything, only thing that’s left is the Menus should be changed to black and blue, and the boxes will be shown on selected apps(if you are reading this Cendaryn, you know what to do next.)

If you are not yet tired of all the WP7 themes and wallpaper, you can add this one more.

Try this new theme, and comment on how you like it below.

More on WP7 Office HUB Integration

More on WP7 Office HUB Integration: "

image Today Microsoft Senior Product Manager Augusto Valdez hosted a forum Q&A session about the Office HUB and email and calendar integration and productivity. There are lots of things we’ve already known, but a few answers are worth sharing which I’ve edited a bit for your sake. I’m also categorizing them and changing the order of the questions/answers to make it a lot easier. A lot of question are almost the same but I think they’re different enough to leave them in. I’ve highlighted a few that I found particularly interesting, especially the fact that there may not be network access to docs out of the box.

SYNCHRONIZATION

Q: Can Office documents be sync’d directly to a PC or will all synchronization be through the cloud?

A: it will have to go through email or SharePoint. We use SkyDrive for OneNote syncing but not for documents, the easiest way to sync a document for now will be to email the document(s) to yourself

Q: Is there any support for accessing files on network shares in the plans for the Office Hub/WP7 in general?

A: right now the file access in networks is restricted to SharePoint access, as it provides a better control on versions and things like that

Q: Will OfficeHub have integration with Microsoft Cloud computing on a business level and additionally on a consumer level?

A: That is an interesting question, for sync docs you can use both SharePoint Server (on premise) or BPOS (SharePoint Online). For OneNote you can even use Windows Live skydrive to sync over the air your notes with your PC

Q: I would like to know about the possibility of syncing multiple calendars and such.

A: yes we can sync with multiple exchange email and calendar accounts and also personal email and calendar accounts like Windows Live or gmail

Q: What level of SharePoint integration will WP7’s office hub support? Will comments/updates be disseminated instantaneously?

A: We do user based document sync between the Office hub and SharePoint, we do it user based because if the file is too large you might want to decide when you want to sync, but if the document has changes in SharePoint when you try to open it from your phone it tells you that there is a newer version in SharePoint and asks you if you want to download it

Q: Can you discuss what type of synchronization will be possible with OneNote?

A: OneNote syncs using either SharePoint or Skydrive, in the Skydrive scenario it creates a section in your online OneNote that is visible from your phone, your PC (using OneNote 2010) or on the web (using OneNote web app)

Q: Will meeting requests work with non-Exchange users? In other words, will meeting requests send iCal appointments to GMail users etc.?

A:Yes, if they are using standard ical format, it should work

Q: Will photos, videos and audio recorded on the phone and added to OneNote be transcribed and indexed, like in the desktop version of OneNote?

A: since you can add pictures and voice recording in Windows Phone 7 and then it syncs to your PC using Windows Live Skydrive you could use OneNote on your PC to process your voice notes, but I have not done this specifically

Q: is there going to be integration (without exchange) to keep your pc and phone up to date with out docking with the pc or bluetooth

A: there will be many different ways to keep your information current, not only through exchange, but you can sync up with gmail, hotmail, windows live, etc.

FUNCTIONALITY

Q: Are we able to edit documents in Windowsphone7?

A: Absolutely, you can view, edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, also you can make comments on Word and Excel files [Note I asked about ‘tracked changes’ twice and was never able to get past the mod – I presume it is not included]

Q: What doc formats are confirmed

A: .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx are supported

Q: will PowerPoint creation be possible or will you only be able to edit them on the phone?

A: Only editing, hard for me to believe that somebody will be creating slides from scratch on phone, but I have seen cases :)

Q: Has Microsoft put any more thought into customization and helping users separate their work information from their personal life?

A: agree, in fact in calendar we color code the different calendars that you have coming from different sources, for example blue for Exchange Server Account 1, yellow for Exchange Server account 2, green for Windows Live calendar, etc

Q: what about .pdf support?

A: .pdf support will have to come a third party solution [Note: I asked if conversion of Word to pdf was possible and it did not pass moderation – I presume it is not present]

Q: will there be support for Outlook/Exchange Tasks?

A: there are many things that we have not finalized as the product is not finished yet, and we cannot talk about them until we are close to be final, hope you guys understand that :) [Note: Sounds like ‘no’ as of today]

Q: Excel for WP7 will have charts?

A: yes we will support charts, if you make changes on the table the generates the chart, the chart gets updated as well

Q: Will we be able to snooze appointment reminders?

A: yes

Q: What about security features for lost/stolen phones?

A: yes we support things like pin lock and remote wipe to address those issues

Q: What types of formatting options are available? Can I change fonts, color, size?

A: yes you can change font, color and size on Word and Excel documents, in PowerPoint you can change the text but it will keep the properties it already has

Windows Phone developer tools now work in final version of Visual Studio 2010: "

Good news for Windows Phone 7 developers -- a Windows Phone Developers Tools CTP refresh is now available, and you can now build apps in the final release of Virtual Studio 2010. New are:

  • This release has been tested to work with the final release of Visual Studio 2010.
  • An updated Windows Phone 7 OS image for the Windows Phone Emulator.
  • A few APIs in the frameworks have been added and or changed. See this MSDN page for more details.
  • The documentation has been updated with new and expanded topics. See this MSDN page for more details.
  • We’ve provided limited support for launchers and choosers. In cases where the underlying built-in experience is not present launchers and choosers are still not available (i.e. the email chooser asks you to select a contact, but there are no contacts in the emulator and no way to add one).
  • Pause/Resume events are now supported.
  • If the tools are installed as the admin user, non-admin users are now able to deploy to the emulator.
  • A problem with incremental deployment of projects has been fixed.
  • A problem resulting in the error "Connection failed because of invalid command-line arguments" being displayed during project creation has been fixed.
  • A problem where the Windows Phone node was not appearing in VS 2010 on non-system drives has been fixed.
  • Design time skin refresh issues have been addressed.
