Microsoft Corp. today announced that strong demand over the Black Friday weekend has propelled retail sales of Kinect for Xbox 360 to more than 2.5 million units worldwide since it launched just 25 days ago.

'We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand,' said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. 'With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5 million units sold to consumers this holiday.'

More interestingly he tweets that

All this development dovetails nicely with Paul Thurrott’s latest post, How would you fix Windows Phone? It is a massive list that covers everything I can Imagine so I would urge you to check it out. If we go by the tweets, I would assume that the update will bring Windows Phone 7 up to parity or beyond, the iPhone or Android in terms of features and user experience. So what kind of features or fixes would you guys like to see in this coming update?

We knew it wasn't much in terms of security, so unlocking Windows Phone 7 to 'developer mode' to enable is now a done deal.

What this means for the community is now you can install unapproved applications onto your device, such as apps that modify the UI or access lower level functionality like the phone. The first recent example of such software was this augmented reality app that accessed the camera API.

Of course we still need an alternative Martketplace to distribute said software, much like Apple's Cydia. We imagine that this won't take too long, leading to rapid growth in the home-brew community for Windows Phone 7.

The unlocker, called ChevronWP7, was completed by Rafael, Chris Walsh and Long Zheng, with the latter two becoming household names by now. To enable the unlocked, developer mode, you simple download the file, connect your phone to your computer and run the installation. Seems easy enough and we're told there's no risk.

Couple of tips:

You may have to install the registry file on ChevronWP7.com, we did

Make sure the lock screen is not on when you try or you'll get an error

Yes, you an re-lock the device if you want to

Today Microsoft has been advertising for a software developer to help bring Microsoft’s Silverlight technology to the Xbox 360.

When this eventually happens the Xbox 360 would then be able to use Windows Phone 7 applications that would then be cross compatible between both devices.

Microsofts advert:

“looking to hire motivated developers with a passion for creating ground breaking multiscreen platform experiences now targeting the XBOX… As a developer you will be responsible for delivering features for Silverlight on the XBOX as part of the next wave. Candidates must have 5+ years of professional development experience in C++ and a willingness to work on new operating systems and languages.”

Microsofts Silverlight technology is already the development basis of Windows phone 7 and already runs on computer desktop by adding Silverlight support to the Xbox 360 will effectively bring the platform to the TV opening up a huge market for Microsoft to sell apps.

Famous ROM hacker Cotulla has announced on Twitter that the Windows phone 7 hack for the HTC HD2 is close to release, but it might not matter much.

He notes that "GSM, GPRS, Camera, GSensor, USB, SD, BT, WLAN, etc" were working, but that, due to Microsoft’s hardware locking of the OS to the motherboard, none of the cloud services, like Zune, marketplace and Xbox Live was working.

Calling it mostly a demo, he notes "It will be released soon, but don’t expect anything from it – without Live services it’s not really usable ".

It seems to get a fully functioning port much more than a leaked ROM image will be needed, but more likely a fully functioning low level jailbreak.

It its latest Windows phone 7 blog post, Microsoft discussed how it is promotion Windows phone 7 apps into the holiday season. The effort consists in part of heavily exploiting their own properties, such as the sign on page on Xbox 360, showcasing apps on Bing Visual Search, and promoting apps in the Zune marketplace.

In the same blog post Microsoft also spoke about the momentum of the app store, noting their were now 15,000 registered developers, 80% more than September, and that there should be around 3000 apps in the store by the end of the week.

The number of apps in Marketplace has been rising rapidly, and currently stands around 2650, so another 350 by the end of the week seems pretty likely.

The above app by GoldRushComputing, which converts photos into ASCII art, is interesting enough in itself, but what is more interesting is that the app has come to Windows Phone 7 and iPhone simultaneously, a development we will certainly encourage.

Even more interesting is that the software has more features on the Windows Phone 7 version, including the ability to upload pictures via twitter and do colour ASCII art.

Microsoft has long touted the ease of development on the Windows Phone 7 platform, which will hopefully lower the barrier for developers who wish to expand their portfolio to multiple platforms.

Although there have been reports of people porting over WP7 to the HTC HD2 and some chatter of people being able to make ROMs (though not load them), there may yet be one final hurdle that could be very difficult to overcome: PVK.

PVK are the private keys Microsoft evidently uses to sign off on the OS that is also tied to the hardware. Specifically, some aspect of the OS looks for and then pulls these keys from the device motherboard for verification. If the keys cannot be found, the motherboard must be replaced or serviced. While elements of the phone/OS might still work without the PVK key, core elements such as Xbox, Marketplace, Windows Live or Zune...basically any 'cloud service' will not.

The challenge to developers/hackers would be to circumvent this security, much like folks have managed to get around Microsoft's Genuine Software checker for Windows 7 and Office products. No easy task, we imagine.

In addition to the above image, there is an accompanying 'Service Advisory' on one of the HTC internal sites that reads:

Description:

This Service Advisory aims to resolve invalid PVK or PVK missing issue for any returned WP7 units

Condition(s) to follow this service advisory:

1. When customer complains about can not access Microsoft services such as XBOX, Marketplace, Windows Live and Zune on the WP7 devices.

2. When ASP performs diagnostic program test, ASP needs to follow the below repair actions if the diagnostic program detects invalid or missing PVK.

If the PVK is invalid or missing, there will be message on device as following when user try to login to Windows Live service.

To all of this we say good on Microsoft for throwing down some serious security, but alas, the ROM community now has a serious challenge ahead of itself. Of course, this is probably more motivated by piracy concerns than ROM cookers, but we imagine Microsoft welcomes that as a wanted side effect as well. Combined with the Xbox Live security (see earlier coverage), cracking this OS wide open may be far off.

The Zune HD and software have always been an underrated but excellent media platform. With the introduction of WP7, that is set to change and I hope that Microsoft will spend some of that $500 million budget putting ads like the one on the video above on TV in addition to all the WP7 ads now playing. The ad does a great job showing the Zune player and WP7 in a compelling way that will certainly make any casual observer want to try it out. The videos are currently only available on the Zune.net website and there is no way to embed them as far as I can tell. Click on the links for a higher quality versions of Zune on WP7, Zune on the PC and Zune on the Xbox 360. You need to have Silverlight installed to view the videos.

The LG E-Note H1000B tablet spotted crossing the FCC earlier this month has made its official debut in Korea. Fronted by a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resistive touchscreen (complete with a stylus), the H1000B runs Windows 7 Starter Edition on an Intel Atom 1.1GHz Z510 or 1.6GHz Z530 processor, paired with 1GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD and optional WiMAX (sadly not integrated, but bundled as a separate modem).

There’s also WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, an SD card slot and two USB ports; since this is basically a full netbook in tablet clothes, you can plug in a USB keyboard, mouse or any other peripheral. The whole thing weighs 850g with the standard, removable 4-cell battery, and measures 278.5 x 180.5 x 14.5 mm.

Options include Windows 7 Professional and a docking-station stand (as shown in the gallery below). Frankly, we’re not too impressed by the specifications, and can’t imagine battery life being particularly impressive either. The LG E-Note H1000B is priced at 961,000 won ($847) from Korean carrier KT, complete with the WiMAX modem.

Paul Thurrott has posted on the various car technologies supported in Windows phone 7, which unfortunately excludes Audio Out via the USB port.

Paul does however note that this feature is in fact on its way.

He writes:

However, I know that Microsoft is using USB audio- and video-out with their own devices, in fact, that’s how they’re doing all of their onstage public demos. This internally developed software is very buggy and it’s not clear what form it will take when it reaches the public, but I’ve been told it’s coming.

This is indeed welcome news, as it opens up the options for accessories such as bedside docks and of course car kits. The Zune, which much of Windows Phone 7 technology is based on, of course does already support Audio and Video out via its standard connector.

Just a month ago we were collectively salivating over the apps that Windows Phone 7 makes possible. Now, many of those apps (specifically games) are coming to fruition as more titles show up in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Two more classics are now available on your Windows Phone 7 device as Gameloft’s Assassin’s Creed ($6.99) and The Oregon Trail ($4.99) are available for download.

We’ll be reviewing both titles in the next several days, so keep an eye out for those. Both games are Xbox Live titles, so trial versions are available. Let us know your first impressions in the comments.

Angry Birds has been a massive success for Rovio Mobile, with over 10 million downloads on the iPhone and iPod Touch, and downloads growing steadily on Google’s Android platform, it seems we will be able to play the game on our large screen TVs.

Rovio Mobile Has announced that they will be launching console versions of Angry Birds for the Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

There are no details as yet on when the console versions of Angry Birds will be released or how much they will retail for, but we suspect it will be as popular on game consoles as it has on handheld devices.

Chris Walshie has continued with his attempts to hack Windows Phone 7 and gain low level access to the OS. Since gaining the ability to run native apps, his latest achievement is is now registry access on LG and HTC devices, and also file system access.

Whatever one thinks of jailbreaking on Windows Phone 7, given that it is easier to break than build something, it is inevitable that eventually hackers will have the free run of the OS. The real question is what Microsoft’s response to this will be.

Late last night, the Windows Phone Marketplace rolled out EA's much anticipated Need for Speed Undercover. To be honest, I'm not much a fan of racing games as I find them boring and...well, too hard sometimes. But EA so nailed this game. I bought it immediately after the first level (all Live games have the try-before-you-buy option).

For $4.99 it has amazing graphics, little movie clips, different adventures and best of all, great controls. The ease and smoothness of driving is just great: the car automatically speeds, you tap the screen to break, swipe down to 'wind break', swipe up for nitro-boost and a double swipe down (two fingers) to pause. I highly recommend you make this one of the first games you try when you grab your new phone tomorrow.

The Kinect controller for Xbox 360 will be this holiday’s must have gadget with reports of pre-orders of the device being sold out even before launch! The video above, although cheesy at times, further indicates how popular this device will be in that they manage to sell out approximately 2000 units in 15 minutes! The HSN price is on the high side though because you could get the 4GB Xbox with Kinect from Wal-Mart or Amazon for $299 albeit without the two extra games and HDMI cable.

There are bigger implications however that go beyond gaming. I still believe that the Video Kinect capabilities will be a big hit because of the compatibility with Windows Live Messenger which is available for the PC and Mac. Add to the possibility of front facing cameras on future WP7 devices and the three screens and a cloud dream becomes reality. The Xbox 360 with Kinect provides the best combination of features compared to IOS/facetime+Apple TV or Android+Google TV because not only does it provide great video chatting capabilities, you can still play DVDs play, games among many other things using the same device which is something that the competition cannot claim to do. I was planning to wait closer to Thanksgiving for great deals to order the Kinect, but I may have to rethink that decision if the reports of scarcity turn out to be true. Are any of you planning to jump into the Kinect bandwagon?

Especially interesting is that after Weatherbug arrived with the first 3rd party Live Tile, Loopt appears to be the second, with their tile being able to display friend locations, updates and comments.

MikyWow was created an application I am sure many of us will love. WMM Wallpaper Map gets your location via cell tower triangulation and uses the Google Maps image for the location as wall paper for your Windows Mobile smartphone.

The app works for VGA and WVGA devices, and allows one to set the zoom level and map type to download.

Even better is that it updates the picture at specified intervals, meaning if you ever wonder exactly where you woke up in the morning, a quick glance at your phone should give you all the info.

The app does not work with Co0kie’s Home Theme, but I suspect this is just a temporary problem.

McObject today announced it is offering support for its Perst™ object-oriented, open source embedded database on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 (WP7) smartphone platform. At present the operating system does not offer persistent database support natively.

The open source software was ported to Windows Phone 7 by APPA Mundi, a Birmingham, England-based consulting firm, who have been offering it since early June from their website.

"Using Perst for .NET, developers using Silverlight can now include true database management system features in their Silverlight applications, including adding persistence to this data by storing it in a container file in isolated storage," said Andy Wigley, an APPA Mundi principal and Microsoft device application Most Valuable Professional (MVP).

McObject have now added the code ported by APPA Mundi to the Perst for .NET distribution available at www.mcobject.com/perst_eval and will now support the platform, effective immediately, McObject CEO Steve Graves said.

Having a fully supported solution for persistent database support on Windows phone 7 is important for enterprise developers investing in business solutions on the platform.

According to McObject business users are a major WP7 target market, with Microsoft says that 90 percent of WP7 target customers use smartphones for business purposes, and 61 percent use their phones equally or more for business compared to personal use.

This business market is precisely where Perst for WP7 will deliver the greatest value according to APPA Mundi’s Andy Wigley.

"Consumer applications typically do not have a complex object model. But for anything that is more line-of-business, a database management system (DBMS) greatly helps developers’ productivity by supporting local storage, search and retrieval at the device level. Perst for .NET is the only DBMS available for WP7, and will be really appealing for anyone who wants to persist even a moderate amount of data."

Q: Is there an all-in-one cab for this theme?
A: At the moment there is no such cab. The reasons are first, we have made several versions for the same parts (like analogue/digital clocks, sliders), so people can choose the one they like and second, since we are still working on the theme, it is easier for us to deal with any bugs/problems having seperate cabs.
Q: Will there be an all-in-one cab?
A: Yes, once we comlete customising all parts.
Q: Do I need to install Cookie´s Home Tab first?
A: Apart from the analogue clocks/cht-addons, you don´t need, but it is adviceably to get the full advantage of your phone and the theme.
Q: Do I need to have Manila/Sence 2.5?
A: Yes

A: Download a zip file to your pc, extract & copy a cab file to your phone´s internal memory or storage card, using a file explorer on your phone find & tap that cab file, install it on the device and then soft reset/restart your phone.

So sayeth Microsoft VP for Marketing Mich Mathews in introducing GM of Live Labs' Kostas Mallios, who was at the Cannes Lions advertising conference to show off the advertising capabilities of the upcoming smartphone platform. Of course, last we heard, the official company line on WP7's release was 'holiday 2010,' so this would definitely narrow the launch window quite a bit, as well as corroborates earlier Telstra roadmap leaks. Not an official statement, but Mathews would definitely be someone in the know here. Don't expect the folks in Redmond to go ahead and confirm -- they work on their own schedule, thank you very much -- but should someone 'fess up, can we also talk about that $150 Kinect price? Just came across this game on YouTube. It’s pretty neat. You get 7 letters (one is locked but I presume based on the level of play there are more or less letters) but you need to spell that longest word you can with the letters you have to beat the clock. Spelling words that are longer or doing it faster adds more time to the clock. I don’t know anything else but here’s a short video and it looks pretty fun:

Sometimes it’s nice to turn off your phones backlight but not let it go into sleep mode. By doing this, it lets background events continue without draining your battery by having the screen on. If you’re using a GPS app, for example, it can continue to track you. Another example is using Active sync where the device by default leaves the backlight on. XDA member virgilp created a shortcut for WM to let you press to turn off the screen without putting the device into sleep. There are other apps that can do this but simplicity is a good thing. Windows Phone 7 comes with its distinctive large tiles on the home screen. User bkf1 of XDA tried to slim line this by making some tiles smaller so you get more on the page and more info is available. I was surprised by the comments at XDA and how many people really like the large tiles of WP7 even though it clearly has less info at a glance then the redesign. Apparently, there is something to the simplicity and style of it all. So put aside the fact that bkf3 used curved edges and assume that the style was a little more Metro (still square and the fonts blend into the tile for example). Is the original WP7 theme and look better, worse, intolerable in any form? Voice your opinion in the poll and comments:

BusTrack is a new app by Matt Hidinger and according to the developer

This app will make sure you never miss a bus, and perhaps more importantly, will make sure you know the best time to leave your house or office so you don’t end up standing and waiting at the bus stop for a ridiculous amount of time.

The app uses Bing Maps Silverlight control to plot out exact GPS locations of buses and stops in real time. As you can see from the video posted by the developer the app can even group your most frequent stops together by a “location” so you don’t have to bounce in and out of different routes that you might want take to your destination. Currently the app only offers Chicago Bus service info , but the developer plans to add more location in the future. If you are listening , we would love to see Melbourne , Australia in there some day

Everyone hates zombies and how many of you all like your boss ? Not many I am guessing, and if using your boss to take out a couple of zombies sounds more fun than using a pump action shotgun. Then you are in luck developer Andy Beaulieu has created a WP7 game ( the game works in the Emulator ) which means the dev has already done the hard work and once the WP7 Marketplace goes live, It should be available for all users.

The game uses some kind of physics engine and you launch your boss ( think a rag-doll version of your boss ) at zombies housed in various structure that will collapse on then as it gets destroyed. The game sounds fun and the game play looks nice, I think it will be perfect for a hand held device. A game with a similar gamepaly on my iPhone called Angry Birds is one of the most popular iPhone game in the market.

What do you guys think ? For me the game play looks nice but graphics-wise the game still needs some work. compared to some of the other games I have seen for WP7.

Brandon Watson just posted about how to get noticed to get a WP7 device as a developer and noted that it’s important to do something big or create some big games. here’s a few examples he pointed out and they’re good.

First up is Jeff Weber who has been creating Silverlight based games and is now working to port them to WP7. What’s so good about his work? Physics engine plus great ideas and implementation. Check out Diver 2 which is a Silverlight game and he is porting to WP7:

Gotta say – i love the concept. And here’s another physics game called Krashlander where you’re a ski jumper trying to get as far as you can:

And if you want to play another of his games check out Tire Storm. It’s like a log roll – you need to stay on while the waves are crashing on you.

1) Get the tools and start building apps – asking for a phone without any kind of app development in place is not going to get it done. If you need ideas, go to our site where customers are posting app ideas for apps they want. As of this writing, there’s almost 1,000 app ideas up there.

2) Blog about your development progress. Screenshots and videos help a lot. So do tips and tricks on how to do amazing things on the platform. The important thing here is to share what you know with the rest of the community. Those who share are engendering much love from us.

3) Tag your posts with “Windows Phone 7 Development” or “wp7dev” so that we, and other developers, can find you.

3) Build something which extends the platform and can be used by other developers. Being developer friendly is top form.

4) Post videos of your app running in the emulator to youtube.

5) Register in the Windows Phone Marketplace. When we know your Marketplace ID, it’s a lot easier to find you and get you a phone.

The HTC Messaging client is well know for being slow and buggy, such that many ROM cooks now intentionally leave it out when producing new Sense ROMs.

Those days may be over however, with a new build of the infamous software leaking out. Version 1.8 is not only faster and more stable, but also includes a feature I believe unique in a shipped OS – hidden SMS messages.

The so called Secure Box feature allows some SMS messages to be password protected, meaning some Lotharios will not have to hide their phone as much anymore

At the E3 conference press conference today, Microsoft officially unveiled "Kinect" formerly known as project Natal to the world. As I watched the conference with an impromptu audience consisting of a 14 and a 12 year old, all we kept on saying was "I’m so getting this when it comes out". Mind you they hadn’t even gotten to the games yet! So you ask what does this have to do with phones? I say Video Kinect!

According to the post from our editor earlier and just as logical step since it is compatible with Windows Live Messenger, this will come to Windows phone 7 in the near future if not at launch. What makes it even more appealing is that it transcends the phone (unlike Facetime which is limited to iPhones only) into the living room with Xbox 360 and hopefully a Windows media center embedded HTPC and finally the PC of course through WLM. Add to the recent reports of MS investing in server side compression technologies to ease data congestion woes, the potential for its availability through 3G networks is real.

Microsoft has not officially announced the support for the feature in WP7 but their competition must quaking in their boots because they have nothing currently to match this. Apple with Facetime and Android with the Qik and Fring solutions come in a distant second.

As the pieces of WP7 continue to fall into place, the hints of the OS turning into a game changer continue to get clearer. I for one can’t wait to finally retire my trusty old Cingular 8125 and delve into the new great era of Windows Phones.

Samsung HUB reports Samsung will be showing off a variety of new phones at CommunicAsia 2010, which runs between the 15 and 18th June. Amongst the collection will be a brand new device, the Windows Mobile powered Samsung Omnia Pro 4.

Unfortunately no more details have been released, but we look forward to seeing if this will be Windows Mobile or in fact the first view of a Windows Phone device from the company.

Add Sony Ericsson to the growing list of potential Windows Phone 7 device rumors. There are plenty of rumors surrounding HTC devices and now Sony is rumored to have the Julie.

The Julie is reported to have a 4" screen and sliding QWERTY keyboard along with the standard WP7 goodies (1 gigahertz processor, multi-touch capability, etc).

Sony was mentioned amongst the many hardware launch partner when Windows Mobile 7 was announced during the 2010 Mobile World Congress. So the rumors aren't that far of a reach except Sony hasn't been a major player on the Windows Phone front. Maybe things are about to change.

Still, it would be interesting to see a Sony WP7 phone with Xbox integration. I wonder how the Play Station crowd will react.

Here's the simple truth about touchscreen smartphones: it's the software, dummy. Just look around at all the flagship handsets... other than a choice of with or without a QWERTY, today's handsets all look pretty much the same and are built using the same off-the-shelf components with very few exceptions. That's why we see so much skinning on Android handsets -- that's how manufacturers like Motorola (Motoblur), Samsung (TouchWiz), and HTC (Sense) differentiate themselves with consumers. But how's that going to work for Windows Phone 7 devices with Microsoft boxing OEMs in with a narrow set of hardware and software guidelines that restrict them from modifying the user interface? Easy, Microsoft is going to help them write unique apps. At least that's what this June 1st Microsoft job posting for a senior Windows Phone software developer says:

'We are looking for a strong and experienced developer to help the OEM to design and develop applications that make their devices stand out in the marketplace. You will also help them to bring new phones to market.'

The position would be 'working directly with a top Korean cellular phone manufacturer, who has made a large commitment to Windows Phone.' Uh, would that be LG or Samsung, we're guessing the former. It'll be interesting to see if these apps are enough to differentiate one touchscreen handset from another. Even more exciting will be watching the homebrew community attempt to hack the manufacturer-specific apps into different handsets in order to create the ultimate Windows Phone 7 superphone... or Frakenphone as the case may be. Regardless, it's clear that Microsoft isn't leaving anything to chance as manfacturers prepare to launch their first devices running Redmond's virgin OS.

Pretty neat little app here. It’s a diary. Go to the date and you get some options. You start by creating an image (if you want) with drawing tools and some preset icons and emoticons to insert and the like. It all seems easy to use. And once your done move on down and you can type and entry to go along with it. Why not take a look at it in action.

'Back in March 2010, we announced the Windows Phone 7 'Rockstar' Award - an award that would be presented to the student team that developed the most compelling Windows Phone 7 application for the Imagine Cup 2010. Over the past few months, several hundred student teams from around the world were building Windows Phone 7 applications using the Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the developer tools. These teams were building applications using either the Silverlight or the XNA framework, and developed some really outstanding applications. The teams were asked to submit the XAP file, which we then used to judge the applications. The applications were tested both on an emulator as well as on a Windows Phone 7 device. Today I'm pleased to announce that off the 131 teams that submitted their applications, a Windows Phone 7 'Rockstar' has been crowned.'

Now this is more like it! There are some really interesting and creative applications created by developers from all over the world - Microsoft handed out $15,000 in cash and a bunch of Windows Phone 7 devices. This is the road they need to keep going down, only ramping it up about 10x to get some of the bigger development houses interested. This is laying the foundation for there being some great apps when Windows Phone 7 ships!

It has been a while since we posted any registry hacks but here is a quick and beneficial registry hack, enabling WIFI draft n support, if you have a HD2. Wireless draft N or 802.11n connection will significantly increase your raw data rate from about 54mbps to about 600mbps of course you need to have a wireless N router as well. If you have a wireless N router then you will see an increase in speed for sure and many people have confirmed that the hack works. Make the following registry change:

HKLM\Comm\BCMSDDHD1\Parms

change the value of “11nModeDisable” from the default 1 to 0

Here's a video of Microsoft demoing the latest build of Windows Phone 7 at the TechEd conference currently going on.

Cloud computing and enterprise was the focus of this session with Sharepoint, Office, Excel and Outlook being featured in this presentation. Overall, the UI is looking real smooth with some nice animations and transitions--in fact, it looks zippier than earlier demonstrations. While full document editing is not really plausible on a smartphone, they stress the importance and ease of document-commenting in WP7 and show off how that works. They do this by opening an email, then modifying an Excel document via Sharepoint.

Plus, that whole spell-correction/word prediction thing has this sorry-speller sold.

In a nice follow up to those Marketplace revisions, Microsoft has just announced that they will allow developers to identify and interact with beta testers for their software via the Marketplace for Windows Phone 7.

Up till now, the question of whether some mechanism for developers to let the public test their program before release was unanswered. With no side-loading available for software installation, it's only through the Marketplace can the public add software to their phones, so some structure in the Marketplace had to be defined.

The mechanism will work via a "deep link" sent by email to the testers and presumably their Windows Live ID will be tagged by the Marketplace to grab the download. In addition, Microsoft is looking for a similar expansion of this public/private "cloud" distribution system to be applied for corporate environments, where they need to roll out their own proprietary software to employees. This latter part is important for the future success of WP7 in the business sector.

Once again, this is a great move by Microsoft and we're glad to see this becoming available.

The world of Windows Mobile has finally received a game that no other mobile device has except PSP… God Of War. The popular Playstation game can now be played on devices like the Touch Pro2, Touch HD2, and whatever other Windows Mobile WVGA device wants to have fun.

This is a Short fun God of War adventure game. You play as Kratos using your sword to hack and slash enemies. Collect treasure chests , run , jump, and slash your way to reach the mystical blue orb. Be aware if the enemies hit you, you will be teleported to the beginning of the stage. Great graphics and sound.

Controls:

The game is controlled by onscreen buttons. The buttons are single-touch which means you can only press one button at a time. You have right , left,jump,exit, and hack and slash button. Enjoy and find the blue orb.

Its simple fun I dont have playstation3 tools so this is the best I could do for now.

While this is not the best looking, and fastest game out, I’m sure the developer will upgrade the graphics and all later. While we wait, I’ll be sure to be enjoying my new game.

The freeware supports Wordpress and Movable Type and appears to have a pretty comprehensive feature set. It lacks in the main in not having a WYSIWIG mode for editing blog posts, but in that it is no worse than the official Wordpress application for the iPhone for example.

One small not is that the URL to connect to wordpress should be changed from /cg-bin/mt-xmlrpc.cgi to /xmlprc.php.

I know I’ve been pretty heavy on WP7 lately so let’s step back…just a little. Here’s an app that will install on your WM 6.5 and earlier device but it utilizes the WP7 panoramic user interface and transitions – and once you try it you’ll see why WP7 is great because you’ll want all your apps to look like this:) Just swipe across the top bar to go between pages and you can tap and scroll throughout pages. I think it’s the best looking an performing app I can think of – everything is fluid and looks great. Want to see it in action for yourself?

So it doesn’t follow the Metro theme and design of WP7 and some other features are usability different but I don’t think any of that takes away from what he’s done here. This is aesthetically a phenomenal app and as a World Cup app it’s got all the info you care about without being mucked up with crap. Back a few months ago, someone on a Chinese site (QQ.com) published the supposed specs for the HTC HD3.

We didn't really cover it, because

Sure, it's HTC anything is possible
There's no real proof

Flash forward six-months later and the situation is still the same, but the technology landscape has changed a bit. For instance, 1.5GHz processors are now real and ready to roll, so that's possible. WiMax is out now (HTC EVO) and even 8MP cameras are legit. But yeah, we also know that 1280x800 is not a supported Windows Phone 7 resolution and a 4.5" screen was always suspect (plus just getting ridiculous; then again, hello Dell Mini 5 'Streak'!).

But still, suppose HTC does make a HD3--not really a stretch of the imagination, is it? Lets take a guess: it'll be a big black slab, three capacitive buttons on the front, 8MP back camera, 1.3MP front, WiMax (or LTE) and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon. The screen will be 4.3", give or take. Slap and HTC logo on there, sell it off to Sprint and AT&T and we're good to go. Are we close?

So the phone featured in this fake video-promo for the supposed HD3? Probably still fake, but also likely pretty close to whatever the actual HD3 will be, since this isn't rocket science. Go ahead watch, get your drool bucket and put that Sprint EVO order on hold for a few months.

File this under 'rumor' but technically very plausible.

We know Windows Phone 7 will be locked for advanced OS options and privileges and that developers will have access to these. And like the iPhone and Android platforms, presumably after the device is "rooted" or "jailbroken", the modding community can have a real go at the OS.

What we don't know is exactly how much of the 'Metro' UI can be changed or modified, but for a lot of folks, they're hoping that most if not all of it can be replaced.

Justin Angel, a former Microsoft Silverlight Program Manager involved heavily with software development in Windows Phone 7, said recently in a tweet:

OEMs (phone vendors) can replace Metro completely, but they won't. It'll be easy to jailbreak WP7 into another theme though.
OEM get to ship 2 themes (OEMLight and ORMDark). A Theme _can_ customize anything, including control templates.

OEMs will have an advanced tool set not available to the public (how long before those leak) which gives them access, to among other things, the phone-radio and evidently the UI (though one wonders what WP7 would "look like" without 'Metro'?). The good news is something we expect to here more of: once the device is jailbroken (which won't take long), people will be able to modify the UI to their liking.

How deep we can go is all the remains. Hopefully it's more than just changing color "accents".

We'll admit that we're not hip to all those popular Flash games on the internet these days, but evidently one is being ported over to Windows Mobile this month due to its popularity.

"Learn to Fly" is about a hapless penguin who is determined to overcome his flight-challenged biology. Its has bold graphics, silly achievements and it's indeed addicting. In fact we would have written this up sooner but we're playing the online Flash game for the last hour.

Tweakers.net reports that developers will have quite a bit more freedom when it comes to Windows Phone 7 devices.

The information for a Windows Phone Developer meet up in Maarssen reveals after registering for Marketplace, they will be able to unlock up to 5 handsets, which will allow them to run unsigned applications and side-load them. These capabilities are not available to run of the mill users.

Latest rumours suggest a Q3 to early Q4 launch of the OS, placing it at most 3-4 months away from hitting the market in devices.

Downloading a full video over WIFI takes about 40 min, so does require a bit of forethought, but apparently the quality can not be faulted.

WindowsforDevices has a great list of items Microsoft need to succeed in the suddenly burgeoning tablet market.

Now many may say stating obvious advice is a bit condescending to Microsoft, who surely have a plan to succeed already. However missteps like the KIN and ZuneHD, and Windows Mobile in recent years leads to little confidence in Microsoft’s judgement, so a little bit of advice may not be out of order.

Here is a short summary of WoD’s advice.

Stop being complacent.

Recent statements by people like Steve Guggenheimer, vice president of Microsoft’s OEM division, with a heavy emphasis on Windows 7, suggest the company does not understand the threat they are facing.

Divide and conquer.Standardize on one x86 OS and one ARM OS.

Windows 7 on large tablets is fine, but anything 10 inches and under should be Windows Embedded Compact 7.

Enforce a uniform user interface.

WOD notes a diversity of user interfaces cause the Microsoft brand to be lost, sucks momentum from the platform and confuses customers.

They note:

A commonality between devices means users can educate one another, enjoy an easy learning curve when they switch from gadget to gadget, and benefit from "For Dummies" books if they’re so inclined.

They suggest a Windows Phone 7 type user interface with cross compatible applications.

Optimize the media experience, with an emphasis on freedom.

Microsoft’s Zune service is a start, and should come standard with each tablet.

Market directly to consumers.

With electronics becoming cheaper the consumer market has increased in importance tremendously. The customer is now no longer the CIO but Mom and Pop. The features of the device should emphasize this.

Encourage OEMs to innovate in hardware. Don’t compete with partners by producing own-brand hardware.

WOD notes OEMs meddling with software has never resulted in a good experience with Windows, and on Windows Mobile it has merely been tolerated due to Microsoft’s neglect of the platform. Microsoft should stick to doing the software, and OEM’s should compete with each other on the excellent hardware features of their devices.

Leverage dominance of the PC operating system market.

Possibly the most important point, they note Microsoft should make Windows tablets the best companion for Windows laptops and desktops, with remote desktop clients, Office software and synching software.

Windows for Devices go into a lot more detail on the various changes Microsoft needs to make to be a player in the market, but I think the above action plan will be enough to give Microsoft a good start.

Five Windows Phone 7 devices from HTC are rumored to have found homes with various wireless carriers.

Conflipper is reporting that the HTC Gold_W is headed to Sprint (the "_W" refers to "World phone" i.e. CDMA & GSM, like the Touch Pro 2), the HTC Schubert and Mondrian are headed to Telus (Mondrian going to Rogers as well), and the HTC Spark_W is being picked up by Bell Mobility and Verizon. Finally, another device, HTC Scorpio aka HTC Olympian is also going to Verizon/Bell Mobility.

The speculation on the carriers is likely based on carrier codes much like our earlier report that the Moderian was headed to AT&T. While we are familiar with the Mondrian, the other phones are a bit of a mystery. As we pick up more on these phones, we'll pass it on.

Eldar Muntazin, Mobile-Review.com boss and scrounge of Nokia, has leaked another Nokia presentation which suggests Nokia still had its eye on Windows phones.

The presentation by Jukka Kiiskinen on Nokia’s strategy in the field of operating systems and services in 2010 features places Windows at the same level as Symbian and Maemo. Eldar claims the slide explicitly does not refer to Nokia’s Windows 7 netbooks, saying in fact that Nokia is replacing those with Maemo devices.

I love my HD2 but the lack of a hardware camera button is annoying…not for me, but when you hand the phone to others to take a photo you see lots of things you never imagined… Anyway, there’s now a simple solution: SciLor’s LeoCameraAnyKey lets you use the volume keys to take a photo on your HD2. Tested and it works. One caveat – it doesn’t enable the keys with the regular camera button – you need to use the app to start the camera, but once it’s started it is exactly the same camera as usual. If you launch the standard camera though the keys aren’t enabled so just change your links. Anyway, the download is available here.

We’ve a soft spot for Viliv, since the Korean company have actually managed to get more than one MID and/or tablet device onto the market rather than just push out renders, and so the company’s new Viliv X10 slate is all the more interesting. LaptopMag grabbed some hands-on time with the 10-inch 1366 x 768 16:9 capacitive touchscreen tablet, complete with an unspecified ARM-based processor that’s 1080p HD capable. Connectivity puts the iPad in the shade, too, with HDMI, an SD card reader, USB and WiFi, and Viliv reckon there’ll be options for 3G and WiMAX too.

Interestingly, while Viliv were showing an Android-based X10 – running OS 2.1 for Computex, but getting OS 2.2 Froyo in time for the slate’s launch – Microsoft had the same hardware running Windows 7 at their booth. No word on whether it will be offered alongside the Android model, or was just put together to bolster Microsoft’s line-up.

According to LaptopMag, both 720p video playback and 3D gaming were smooth and impressive on the X10, with the latter using the slate’s accelerometer to navigate a racing title. Battery life is tipped at an iPad-matching 10hrs, and while Viliv aren’t saying when exactly the X10 will go on sale, it’s apparently “coming along nicely”. Now we just have to hope pricing is palatable.

One area we have not heard much about in regards to Windows Phone 7 is sound. And why would we? It's a handheld device, usually a single speaker and basically all we care about is how the speakerphone sounds. Everything so far has been about the visual but not the audio.

Well, turns out the audio abilities of XNA for Windows Phone 7 also has some features we didn't know about. In an interview with iTWire, developer Nick Randolph, the CEO of Built to Roam (aka the same guy that used a Wii remote in his app demo at ReMix Australia), was asked what he thought was "cool and different" about the new OS.

His answer: the high quality of 3D sound

...which could simulate sound coming from behind you, on the side of you, as Windows Phone 7 devices have a concept of audio emitters and audio listeners, and based on where you position those you get different sound.
Randolph said that "you can use that to create different effects" in only "a dozen lines of code, part of the XNA framework and usable by Silverlight."

It's too early to know just how good it will sound in real life, but we're pretty stoked that hardware manufacturers and software developers can at least attempt to exploit this under-appreciated yet essential output for our increasingly busy "phones". Perhaps we'll even seen hardware manufacturers use high-end speakers to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. Bose-mobile, anyone?

When details of Windows Phone 7 was announced some developers expressed disappointment that the software did not come with a SQLite database component, with Microsoft preferring developers use cloud-based services for database storage.

Unlike others however Dan Ardelean did not just complain, but went about fixing it, and has produced a solution which he has made available to all developers.

He modified the csharp-sqlite implementation developed by noah.hart to work with IsolatedStorage, allowing simple local database support in windows Phone 7.

Netbooknews have published this hands-on video of the Asus Eee Pad EP101TC, Asus’s Windows CE 7 powered tablet, and while it seems in many ways the software is more concept than reality, the supposedly Nvidia Tegra 2 powered device does appear to play video pretty smoothly and the design concept appears pretty comprehensive.

Supposedly being sold for around $399 to $499, the device is set for an early 2011 release.

"My MediaCenter Remote" for Windows Phone 7 nears beta status: "

One of the more interesting and useful apps in development for Windows Phone 7 is "My MediaCenter Remote" which integrates with the Windows Media Center (an under-rated features of Windows 7). Well, it's useful if you don't want to splurge $10 for a physical remote, ya cheapskate.

The latest version by dgaust is near beta, although like other developers he's anxiously awaiting a physical device to actually run it on. The features so far completed are as follows:

View and play Recorded TV - done
View and play back tv stored by myTV - done
View music, and create album playlists - done
Remote control media centre - done

What's left is tweaking up some of the graphics, which are a bit dull or just missing at this point (placeholders). Overall though, considering we are still six months from the release of WP7, it's nice to know we should have some advanced media center functionality right out the gate. But we can't help but wish this could actually stream our content instead of just being a remote for it.

S2P is a great application for those that cannot stand looking at what Microsoft calls a music player, with some great features and looks to go with it. Well after a long period without an update, I asked the developer what gives, and the response was very quick. The developer said he has been working hard on the next versions, but the users should not expect to see any “Album view” support. This comes after Apple was granted patent rights over cover flow, and so adding that to his player would be a great legal risk. Neither the less the next version should be a whole lot better, with features that work great on everything, and maybe something cool for the HD2.

I told the developer that before his next release I would write an article asking the readers what they would want in a great music player, and so here it is.

Below please comment and tell us what you think a great player should have. If you are currently using S2P then tell us what you think should be added, removed, and or improved. He will read the article and see what he can do.

My personal request was for album view on my HD2, but sadly that cannot be done. I also would like some awesome multi touch gestures, and better album artwork detection, and lastly some new S2U2 integration.

Well the app is a ‘dress up’ app where you can dress up characters in different clothing, etc. There’s certainly a market for that out there and this app seems to handle it well. The thing I’m more excited for is that their website features a series of XNA based games (including one for Zune) so their interest in WP7 hopefully means there are a few ports in the work…

Oh, hello Wind Pad! MSI just took the wraps off its 10-inch, Windows 7 tablet during the company's Computex press conference, and we're gathering details as we speak. MSI CEO Joseph Hsu introduced the tablet and explained that with it will be powered by an Intel Atom processor and run Windows 7, though they have created an MSI Wind Touch UI. According to the spec sheet we were given, it will weigh 800 grams and packs both 3G and WiFi. It also has USB ports, an HDMI port and a webcam.

WindowsforDevices has brought this recent Microsoft slide to our attention, which clearly states an expected release date in Q2 2010 for Windows CE 7, to be renamed Windows Embedded Compact 7.

On the same page Microsoft writes:

Q: What’s next on the horizon for Windows Embedded?
A: We will be announcing the RTM of Windows Embedded Standard 7 in the second quarter of this calendar year, followed by a release for Windows Embedded Compact 7, the next generation of the Windows Embedded CE platform in the Q2 timeframe of this calendar year as well. Windows CE 7 brings a number of consumer-facing technologies to the table that should make devices based on it more suitable for use in tablets, such as an improved browser, DNLA support, Media Transfer Protocol support, and support for technologies like Silverlight and Flash for user interface elements. It is widely believed to be the basis of Windows Phone 7, but Microsoft has been extremely cagey about admitting this.

A port of Arknoid (Brick Breaker) called XNArknoid has been made available (including the source code). The reason it’s significant is because we’ve been talking about Silverlight apps a lot recently. This is actually written in XNA – the code used for Xbox games. The dev clearly knows what he’s doing. Arknoid cannot be done in Silverlight. As described here, the way that trigger events and sprites are rendered in Silverlight means that you get phenomenal performance for single press events but if it’s going to involve constant touches, each touch is an event in Silverlight and it kills the frame rate. In Silverlight “the slower and less frequent the user moves the paddle, the fewer events get fired, and the faster and more frequent the user moves the paddle, the more events get fired – and as the app gets slammed with events it can directly affect performance.” So XNA must be used.

So for the devs out there, there’s a lesson. Silverlight is really intended for apps and some games. More complicated games (and those with constant touches) require XNA. So, XNArknoid was done the right way.

More physics love comes to WP7 from Andy Beaulieu. Like last time you can try this guy out online right now since it’s Silverlight based. You get to see physics, changes in perspective and gestures and he’s provided the source code. Check it out on his website. In an interesting note he talks about how this was created:

This Shuffleboard game was created as the basis for a Coding4Fun tutorial, which will be available soon on the C4F Website. I don’t want to spoil the fun for the official tutorial release so I won’t go into much detail here, but this demo should be helpful for folks wanting to quickly create physics based games for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 devices.

When the tutorial is released, it will include a video walkthrough showing step-by-step creation using Visual Studio 2010 and Expression Blend 4.

Numbers for Microsoft's new mobile phone sales projections are ricocheting around the echo chamber of the tech blogosphere Friday and research firm IDC wants to set them straight.

Microsoft plans to start selling a new version of its mobile phone called Windows Phone 7 for the holidays. MobileTechWorld reported Microsoft expects to sell 30 million of the new phones by end of 2011, based on a slide shown at a ReMIX conference. The Thursday report cited IDC, the research firm in Framingham, Mass., as the source. ReMIX is a Microsoft Web developer conference where the company is courting developers to build apps for Windows Phone 7.

I talked to Will Stofega, a wireless industry analyst at IDC Friday, and he said the numbers are not from IDC. 'We don’t know who used it and where it came from. It’s kind of disturbing,' Stofega said. Also, he said, 'We're really pissed.' And, 'No one ever called to see if this was a mistake that someone made.'

IDC forecasts mobile phone shipments based on operating system, and does not break out specific devices such as Windows Phone 7, Stofega said. When it forecasts the Microsoft shipments, he said, it includes past operating systems such as Windows Mobile 6.5, as well as Windows Phone 7.

Here are IDC's projections for phone shipments, based on operating system, in the year 2011. The projections were made in March:

Microsoft, including Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Phone 7: 32 million

Apple iPhone - 36 million

Google Android - 42 million

Stofega said these are shipments projected for 2011, not the number of handsets already sold and in use.

Competition is hot these days in the music-download biz and Microsoft's $14.99 a month Zune Pass may instead get chopped down to $9.99, according to senior product manager Terry Farrell in an interview with Business Week.

While Phil and I think the $14.99 a month price is fair (you get to purchase 10 songs a month with that $14.99, in addition to unlimited downloading), others in the industry, notably Amazon and Rhapsody, offer a similar service for $10.

Microsoft does need to position itself here carefully: they want to make a profit and find that sweet spot, but they also want to make sure when you buy an upcoming Windows Phone 7 device, you take advantage of the Zune Marketplace.

Finding just the right combo could be killer, because while Amazon has some presence on mobile (notably Android), Rhapsody is less straight-forward and has less presence. (Plus in comparison, Zune Marketplace is a better experience than Amazon's on Android). This is still the one area that Microsoft can really exploit against Apple, who still don't have a monthly pass subscription.

And while they're at it, we'd like to see Microsoft implement some type of Zune Video Pass, which was rumored to be coming. The idea of having unlimited video streaming/downloading on my Windows Phone 7 would be fantastic.

In what could be a smart move to both lock in a game developer and spur more development on Windows Mobile (yes, we still talk about it), Microsoft is commissioning Touch Dimensions, a recent gaming startup from Singapore.

Known for creating "natural" interfaces for gaming and having knack for those sweet little simple games that people on mobile phones often prefer, Touch Dimensions has been tasked with bringing roughly twenty games to the Windows phone marketplace and they all will be free for the consumer.

These casual games will range from "...a digital sketchpad to a Whack-A-Mole-type game that lets you smack mosquitoes to oblivion".

Want to see what they are capable of? Touch Dimensions already have two games available: "Autumn Dynasty" and "Totem Star Lite"/Totem Star Christmas". And we'll keep you posted on when these inspired freebies start popping up!

While we knew some of the details about the LG Panther (GW910), we didn't have all the little nitty-gritty bits.

Granted, this is not the sexiest phone we've ever seen, but functional? Heck yeah, it seems like it'll do quite well with our new OS. The other thing is this is not final and LG might be apt to change or modify things before launch. Of note is the 720p video recording, something which is becoming more and more the norm these days.

But currently, it's not so bad, though we're hoping to see what HTC can bring to the table. Come on guys, leak something already...

We keep hearing various time-frames for the release of Windows Phone 7. Usually "holiday season" is tossed around, which here in the States stretches from mid-October (if you count Halloween) through January 2nd.

Some of us have been hearing October as the big month, but we're not even sure if that's just announcing products or actual release date. For instance, we can see Microsoft back here in NYC at their "Open House" event kicking off WP7 with a bunch of OEMs and developers, but not releasing till...well later.

Ballmer today is India, once again doing what he does best, giving speeches and pep talks, much like an impromptu Chris Farley. In response to a question about WP7, Ballmer reportedly had this to say:

We have to deliver devices with our partners this Christmas.

We suppose this isn't really news if they do "deliver" by Christmas, after all that is still the Holiday season. But we can't help but wish it was more October-ish? And to throw in a zinger, he also reportedly said this

One of our competitors seems a little confused, has come out with two operating systems that I cannot tell the difference between.

Ahem, not sure if he should be throwing stones on such a day as this one, but okay.

Looks like the folks at MobileTechWorld got to play with the Samsung Omnia HD modified for Windows Phone 7.

They note that the processor has been updated from the lackluster TI OMAP 3430 to a Snapdragon (presumably 1GHz) and that this device probably won't make it to production, for obvious reasons.

Their impressions? Very positive noting

As you can see in the video below everything is running smoothly with no sign of lag or stuttering and everything was functional on the handset (GPS, data, and even camera). It’s the smoothies mobile experience I have ever witness (on par with the iPhone) and it definitely feels a lot better when used on a real handset compared to the desktop emulator.

That seems to be the consensus lately on anyone who gets to play with one of these prototypes, which is a great sign considering finalized hardware and software is still months away.

Also, the video game 'Twin Blades' by Press Star Studio was shown off. The game is currently available on Xbox Live Arcade (400 points) and was ported in under 2 weeks by one programmer. It's already fully integrated with Xbox including achievements and this will be available when WP7 launches. Sweet--going to download to XBox right now.

It's been released and tested on the HTC HD2 and allows you to adjust and tweak 3DEffect, Boost Sound, Bass, Treble and save them to Presets.

Instructions:
1. Install the CAB to \Device.
2. DO NOT ACCESS THE PROGRAM.
3. Soft reset your device.
4. Access it's settings from Settings -> System -> SRS WOWHD or Start -> SRS WOWHD

Version 2.1 change log:
